History about The Cottage on Broad
This house was built in 1880. The basement includes storage rooms for coal, fruit, and vegetables. There were several different owners until 1938, when Edith and Muriel Heers bought the property. The two sisters never married and made their home here for 48 years, until 1986. They are remembered by many local people as the two ladies with straw hats and the old green Model A Ford. Edith worked as a bookkeeper at the Ford Garage and bought the car new in 1930. Muriel worked as a news correspondent for area newspapers.
They completely remodeled the house in the early forties. The upstairs was designed to be an apartment, but was never rented out. Another room was added in the early sixties, when the ladies decided to have separate kitchens. Each kitchen had its own cook stove and chimney. We thought you’d enjoy remembering Edith and Muriel Heers. |
